You’ve planned your remodel, move, or sale, and you’ve scheduled your packout. Now the big day is coming up. Knowing what will happen, and what you can do to help, takes a lot of the stress out of it. Here’s a walk-through of a typical packout day and a checklist you can use before, during, and after.
Before the Crew Arrives
Most of the real preparation happens in the days before. By the morning of your packout, you’ll ideally have:
- Set aside everything you’re keeping with you in a clearly marked “do not pack” area
- Gathered important documents, medications, valuables, and electronics into a bag that stays with you
- Cleared trash and obvious clutter
- Made a plan for pets and kids
- Shared any last-minute changes with your packout team
What Typically Happens on Packout Day
Every home is different, but most packouts follow a similar flow.
1. Arrival and a quick check-in
The crew arrives and the lead will usually walk through the home with you. This is the time to confirm which rooms and items are going, point out fragile or sentimental pieces, and show them your “do not pack” area.
2. Protecting your home
Before items start moving, the crew may lay down floor protection and pad doorways or railings along the main path out of the house. This helps keep walls and floors in good shape while furniture is carried out.
3. Inventory and packing
Packing usually happens room by room. As items are wrapped and boxed, they’re documented in the inventory and labeled with the room, a short description, and a box number. Fragile items like dishes, glassware, art, and mirrors get extra wrapping and specialty boxes.
4. Furniture prep
Larger pieces are padded and wrapped. Some furniture may need to be taken apart, such as bed frames or table legs, with hardware bagged and labeled so it can be put back together later.
5. Loading and transport
Once a room or section is packed, items are carried out and loaded. The crew secures everything for the trip to storage.
6. Final walkthrough
Before the crew leaves, walk through the home together. Check closets, cabinets, the garage, and any spaces that are easy to forget. Confirm that what was meant to go is gone and what was meant to stay is still there.
How Long Does Packout Day Take?
That depends on the size of your home, how many rooms are involved, how many fragile items there are, and how ready the space is. A single room may move quickly, while a whole home can take longer and sometimes stretches over more than one day. Your packout team can give you a better sense of timing after the walkthrough.
Your Role on Packout Day
You don’t need to lift a thing, but it helps to be available, especially at the start and end of the day. Being reachable means the crew can ask quick questions like “Is this lamp going or staying?” instead of guessing.
Tips for a smooth day
- Stay reachable: Keep your phone on and nearby.
- Speak up early: Mention anything that needs special handling before it gets packed.
- Keep paths clear: Kids, pets, and extra visitors are best kept out of busy walkways.
- Ask questions: If you’re unsure how something will be packed or stored, ask.
