Kitchen Remodel Cost Factors in the Houston Area

If you search online for “kitchen remodel cost,” you’ll find national averages all over the map. Those numbers don’t tell you much about your kitchen in Pasadena, Seabrook or League City. Your price depends on your layout, your materials, the condition of your house and the scope you choose.

So instead of throwing out a number that might not apply to you, this post explains what drives the cost up or down. Once you understand these factors, you can have a much more useful conversation with any contractor, and you’ll be better at comparing bids.

1. Scope: Refresh, Remodel or Full Gut

Scope is the biggest cost driver of all.

Each step up adds trades, time, permits and materials.

2. Layout Changes

Keeping the sink, range and refrigerator where they are is one of the best ways to control cost. Moving them means rerouting plumbing, electrical, gas and venting. Many Houston-area homes are built on a concrete slab, so moving a sink drain can mean cutting and patching the slab, which costs considerably more than moving a drain in a home with a crawl space. (A Houston-area foundation guide notes that the large majority of houses in the Greater Houston Area sit on slab-on-ground foundations.)

Removing or moving walls adds framing work, and possibly an engineer’s review if the wall is load-bearing.

3. Cabinets

Cabinets are often one of the largest parts of a kitchen budget. Cost depends on:

Cabinet construction also matters in our humid climate. Ask how the cabinet boxes hold up to moisture, especially the sink base.

4. Countertops

Laminate, butcher block, granite, quartz, solid surface and other materials all fall in different price tiers. Beyond the material itself, cost is affected by:

5. Appliances

Appliances can be a small or a large part of the budget depending on what you choose. Built-in, panel-ready, professional-style or specialty appliances can also mean more cabinet modification, more electrical capacity or a bigger range hood with ducting to the outside.

6. Plumbing, Electrical and Ventilation

Older homes may need upgrades to meet current code once walls are opened. Common cost drivers include:

In Texas, this work is done by state-licensed plumbers and electricians.

7. Flooring

Tile, luxury vinyl plank, engineered wood and other options vary in material and labor cost. Choosing whether to install flooring before or after the cabinets also affects the cost and future flexibility. Removing old tile, especially tile set in a mortar bed, can add labor.

8. Hidden Conditions

This is the factor nobody can price perfectly in advance. Once demo starts, we may find:

A good contractor will tell you up front that hidden conditions are possible and explain how they’ll be handled: you’re shown the problem, and you approve a written change order before work continues. Many homeowners set aside a contingency for this.

9. Permits and Inspections

Permit fees and requirements vary by city, and they change. Pasadena bases residential building permit fees on square footage under roof, Baytown posts a flat fee for each permit type in a schedule effective June 1, 2026, and League City adopted a new fee schedule on August 1, 2026. Ask whether permit fees are included in each bid. Permits are a small but real line item, and they’re worth it.

10. Labor Market and Timing

Demand for trades in the Houston area goes up and down. After a major storm or flood, demand for contractors and materials can rise sharply, which affects both availability and price. Material prices also change over time, so a bid is usually good for a limited period.

11. Finish Level and Details

Backsplash tile, decorative hardware, specialty lighting, open shelving, trim work and paint all add up. Small choices, multiplied across a whole kitchen, can noticeably change the total.
